Caller ID is trivially spoofed — scammers display any number they want. AwayAuth verification is computed from a secret only the two paired people hold, so there is nothing to spoof and nothing to intercept that works twice.
A cloned voice can imitate how someone sounds — it can’t tap Confirm on their signed-in phone, and it can’t make the lock turn green from a secret it doesn’t have. Verification moves from “does this sound right?” to mathematics.
Google throws AI at the problem — models that listen and guess, then hand back a probability, not a yes or no, and only inside Google’s world on the right phone. AwayAuth needs none of it: the real person proves themselves and the lock turns green — deterministic, on any phone, no AI, no Pixel required.
Contact Key Verification is genuinely good — but it lives entirely inside Apple’s walls: iMessage and FaceTime, Apple device to Apple device. It does nothing when your bank calls your Android, or when any business you deal with needs to prove it’s really them. AwayAuth works on any phone with a browser, and it runs both ways — a caller proves themselves to you, and you can prove yourself back. No ecosystem to buy into, no matching hardware required.
Every check has a spoken fallback: tap “Words” and each side reads two short words from their own screen. No taps to compare, nothing to install mid-call — designed for every generation.
The rule is absolute: no verification, no conversation. If a caller can’t verify — for any reason, including “the system is down” — hang up and call back on a number you look up yourself. A real person will never pressure you to proceed unverified.
For the people you pair with, there is nothing on our servers to steal: the proof is computed on your phone and theirs, from a shared key we never hold. A breach of AwayAuth would expose public keys and metadata — who paired with whom — but never a verification, and never anything that could let someone impersonate you to a contact. Any contact details you add, like a phone number, are encrypted at rest. (Verifications with a business use a separate model, where the business’s own system computes the codes; those are protected by strong encryption at rest rather than end-to-end.)
