How to verify who’s really calling
Caller ID lies. Voices can be cloned. “Press 1 to confirm” proves nothing. So how do you actually know who’s on the other end of a call? The answer is older than the scams: a shared secret only the two real people can produce.
Why the usual signals fail
Caller ID is spoofable, so the number and name are meaningless as proof. A familiar voice can now be synthesized. And any “verification” the caller controls — reading you a number, asking you to press a key — proves only that they can talk.
Real verification has to be something an impostor cannot produce, no matter what they say or how they sound.
What actually proves identity
A matched code. Two people who’ve paired share a secret; from it, each device shows a rotating code. When both codes match, identity is proven — because only the real device could have generated it.
It’s the same kind of math that secures banking apps, pointed at the simplest question: is this really you?
Verification that works anywhere
AwayAuth runs in any phone’s browser — no app store, no special hardware, no ecosystem. It works both ways, so a caller can prove themselves to you and you can prove yourself back.
And it’s end-to-end encrypted: the codes are computed on each device, so not even AwayAuth can read them.

Frequently asked questions
Why can’t I trust caller ID?
Because it’s trivially spoofed. Scammers can make any name or number appear on your screen, including your bank’s real number or a contact’s name.
Does AwayAuth need an app from the app store?
No. It runs in the browser on any modern phone. There’s nothing to download and no particular brand of phone required.
Is it really end-to-end encrypted?
Yes. For person-to-person verification, the codes are derived on your device and the other person’s from a shared key. AwayAuth stores only public keys and never sees the codes.
Can I prove who I am to a caller, too?
Yes — verification is mutual. That’s the “and what about you?” in AwayAuth: they prove themselves to you, and you can prove yourself right back.
